He's Three!

My baby is three.  My baby is three.  My baby is THREE!  Bittersweet.  Why does it feel like not that long ago, I was holding Tripp in my arms for the first time and now three years have gone by in a flash.  I'm truly amazed by the things he does and says and couldn't imagine a more perfect son for Rob and I.  We are so proud of the boy he has become and the man he will eventually grow up to be.  I'd like to say he's turned out so sweet because we've done a fantastic job raising him, but honestly I think it's partly because we drew the lucky straw.  Because God knew we needed an easy first-born so we'd be open to having more children later on.  We're blessed parents and cannot wait to see what big plans the Lord has for our son.

A few things about 3 year old Tripp:
~Height:  3 ft. 2.58 inches (71%)
~Weight: 33 lbs. (65%)
~Still loves his stuffed butterfly named "butterfly"...also affectionately called "my buddy".  He has to sleep with him during all naps and at bedtime.  Tripp carries him around the house, eats meals with him, and will often bring him into the car when we have to go somewhere.  I always make Tripp leave butterfly in the car when we are out and about because I do not want to risk losing that precious toy.  I've looked online, numerous times, to see if I could find a back-up/replacement in case the unthinkable happened and we lost butterfly, but so far, no luck.
~Has to wear socks at all times.  Seriously, WILL NOT go without them, unless he has sandals on his feet.  But, as soon as we take those sandals off, he says, "Mommy, where are my socks?".  Some nights I think he's going to roast with them on so I try to leave them off after his bath, but he never forgets and will ask for them as I'm tucking him in.
~Adores his little sister "Cami" or "my sister".  They usually wake up at about the same time in the morning. I get Tripp first and he runs to her room to open the door.  He actually gets upset if I try to help him.
~Is Daytime potty trained.  He started using the potty during spring break, about 3 months ago, and hasn't had any day accidents since.  Nighttime is a different story.  He still needs to wear a pull-up at night and often wakes up wet in the morning.  I think he's peeing in the middle of the night because the first thing we do when he wakes up is go to the potty and he always goes then.  He's also having an issue with stool holding.  This has been an ongoing problem.  He goes Poop on the potty some of the time, but will often wait until he's relaxed in bed to do the #2...every 3 days...yep, only about once every 3 days!  We've tried Miralax to soften his stools, but the consistency doesn't seem to be the problem at this point.  We've talked to his Pediatrician about it and she thinks he's stool-holding because of some painful constipation issues he's had in the past.  She thinks he holds because he associates going with a painful experience which in turn makes him constipated.  Vicious cycle.  We think the bed is the only place he feels relaxed enough to go.  Neither she nor I are too worried about the bedtime pottying.  She said most boys take longer to night train.  At this point, I'm just happy he's day trained because it has tremendously cut down on the number of diapers I have to buy.  Alright, enough about Poop.
~Is still a great sleeper.  Naps for 2 hours every afternoon and sleeps for 12 hours at night.  He goes to bed around 8:00 pm and wakes at 8:00 am.
~Always wakes up happy.
~Protests going down for a nap or to bed, but the protest is short-lived and once in bed, he never cries or gets out of the bed.
~Has to sleep with all of his stuffed animals in the bed.  He has so many and remembers every.single.one.  If one is missing, he WILL ask you to find it.  He's become very imaginative and likes to make them talk to each other every night.  We usually play a few minutes before bed by letting all of the animals have conversations with each other.  It's the only way to get him to calm down and relax before sleep.  Otherwise, he seems to get a huge burst of energy and lays in his bed talking for about 2 hours before he falls asleep.  Part of the reason he loves all of the animals to sleep with him is because they somehow make him feel safer in the dark.  I'm not sure why, but he has suddenly become slightly afraid of the dark.  The nightlight must be on for Rob or I to leave the room and his animals have to be right next to him.  He says, "Mommy, I'm scary."  "Mommy, I need a tent."  A tent is his way of saying that he would like his animals to be placed all around him.  He knows a tent covers you and protects you from the elements outside so I'm guessing a "tent" of animals in his bed makes him feel safe.  I don't actually put the animals on top of him, just in a circle around him.
~Remains a picky eater, but has started to try more foods.  At dinnertime, we always make him try atleast one bite of whatever I've cooked.  My goal is to increase this to 3 bites in the near future.  If he really doesn't like what I've made, I often cave and give him something else.  Bad, I know, but he needs to eat so that brain can continue to grow.  His favorite phrase to use when he doesn't want something I've made is, "Mommy, I CAN'T like this."  Sometimes I find it cute while other days it's frustrating to hear.
~Animal-Lover.  I know all children love animals, but Tripp is obsessed.  He talks about them all day.  Wants to know where they live, what they eat, what they do, etc.  From the sea, to land, to air, he loves every animal.
~Big fan of dinosaurs.  I think this goes hand-in-hand with being an animal-lover.  He can name a dinosaur that starts with every letter of the alphabet.
~Speaking of the alphabet, he can tell you every sound each letter makes and loves to go through the alphabet and list things that start with each letter.
~Loves to read.  I hope his love for it continues as he grows.  We read atleast 2 books at bedtime and countless books throughout the day.
~Talks non-stop.  Asks questions non-stop.  "Mommy, what does that do?"
~Has become very interested in playing games.  He doesn't like to lose, but who does? Candy Land, Twister, and Chutes and Ladders are his favorite.    He made up a song for the Chutes and Ladders game that goes to the tune of the old show, "Married With Children".  Ha!  He's never seen the show, but I think he heard the theme song while I was watching the Today Show one morning and later on created his own song.  So creative.  It's comical to play Twister with him because he always wants to spin for Rob and I and basically just makes us move our RIGHT HAND everywhere.  "Right Hand Red"..."Right Hand Green"..."Right Hand Blue"..."Right Hand Yellow"..."Right Hand Purple...There's no Purple!"  So silly.
~Is very social.    He needs and wants to be around others constantly.  He's not the best at playing by himself.  I'm sure it's partly from being the oldest child, but also because he likes having friends around.  If I tell him we are meeting someone for a play date the next day, you better believe he wakes up asking for that friend.
~Enjoys "soccer practice".  The soccer classes he's been taking for the past year are wonderful.  He looks forward to going every week and his skills have vastly improved over the past year.  I'm not sure if we have a Pelé, Ronaldo, or Messi on our hands, but the classes wear him out.  As long as he's having fun and getting some exercise, I'm happy.
~Wears an 8.5 shoe, 3T shirts and 2T-3T bottoms.  He has to wear some 2T's because of his thinner build.  Thank goodness for adjustable waistbands.  His torso is very long like his Daddy's, but his legs are of average height.
~Has a new love for the Disney show, "Jake and the Neverland Pirates".  He likes to pretend he's Jake and wants me to call him "Jake" when we play pirates.  He will call me "Momma Pirate".  It's so cute.
~Big fan of the outdoors.  Thrilled to go to any playground.  Enjoys walking to the one in our neighborhood or meeting friends at any of the nearby parks.
~Doesn't like to end playtime when we are with his friends.  He usually cries for a minute because he'd rather stay and play.
~Acts like the average three year old most of the time.  Sweet one minute and requires time-out the next.
~All-around happy, healthy, loving boy.  He has always been very affectionate and that thrills his Mommy!
